It’s no secret that hypothyroidism is not an easy condition to live with. The victims of an underactive thyroid gland experience a myriad of symptoms, such as sluggishness, heightened sensitivity to cold, mood swings, and, unfortunately, weight gain. The latter is one of the earliest telltale signs of hypothyroidism, and it can be a lifelong burden if not treated with healthy thyroid friendly foods.

If you have hypothyroidism, consider making the following foods a staple of your diet to promote a healthier lifestyle and encourage weight loss.

Seaweed

Seaweed is a common dietary recommendation for hypothyroidism because of its high concentration of iodine, which is essential for the production of thyroid hormone. However, eating too much iodine can be just as bad as not eating enough. While seafood is excellent for treating hypothyroidism, make sure you’re not eating it excessively.

Fish

If seaweed is stacked with iodine, it’s only fitting that seafood is too. Salmon, in particular, is a great choice for hypothyroidism; it’s extremely effective at reducing inflammation and is a common choice of meat for weight loss.

Vegetables

It’s hard to ever argue a reason not to eat fresh vegetables, and it’s no different with hypothyroidism. Vegetables have numerous health benefits and are rich in antioxidants. However, try to set limits on your consumption of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. Eating too much of these can impede your body’s ability to absorb iodine.

Eggs

We’ve talked about iodine, but another key ingredient your body needs for healthy thyroid function is selenium. Eggs carry both in abundance. Is there anything eggs can’t do?!

Chicken or Beef

If we’re still talking about essential thyroid nutrients, let’s talk about zinc. Hypothyroidism can lead to a zinc deficiency, so you’ll want to get as much as possible. Chicken and beef are an excellent choice for this, and they run the benefit of being cheap and highly versatile.

Milk and Yogurt

If you have hypothyroidism, you’ll want as much vitamin D you can get. Vitamin D deficiency is often associated with hypothyroidism. Fortunately, you can get a nice heaping dose of it in a glass of vitamin D milk. Yogurt is also a great choice, as its good bacteria can be beneficial to your gut health.
